X Games 2012: Skateboarding is Taken Over by Youngsters

Jun 28, 2012 03:58 PM EDT

It is exactly 13 years ago today since the world saw Tony Hawk's incredible X Games performance in San Francisco, California, where he completed the first ever 900 in professional skateboarding history.

13 years ago was 1999. Tom Schaar, Trey Wood and Jagger Eaton were not even born yet.

Why are these names relevant? Because they form the trio of boys that will participate in the 2012 X Games.

I call them because boys they are not even teenagers yet. Schaar is 12 years old, while Wood and Eaton are just 11.

In an interview, in preparation for the race, Trey Wood said that making the X Games is a big accomplishment, "It's what I've been working for my whole life."

He is either smiling as he says this or squinting because the sun is in his face. The kid is half my age and makes it seen he has been doing this for years.

Crazy.

Wood said he is not nervous because he knows he has many more years of practice and growth left, which will help him relax before the competition.

One of Tom Schaars' most memorable moments in his young career came in the 2012 Asia X Games, Schaar popped a 1080 and won first place in the Mini-Mega event.

That was the first time in history a 1080 had been landed on a skateboard.

For these young skaters, it will be one competition they will enjoy and remember as they get the chance to compete against their heroes.

Coverage of the 2012 Summer X Games kickoff at 9PM EDT tonight on ESPN2.

Skateboarding and Motorcross will take centerstage.
