The Los Angeles Dodgers are reaping the benefits of a strong pitching rotation and Josh Beckett is just once piece the complete puzzle. The pitcher is having a turnaround season as he continues to string together strong starts this year. The Dodgers open up a three-game series against the New York Mets and Beckett is looking to take advantage of their struggling lineup.
Beckett is 1-1 on the season with a 2.38 ERA. His last start against the Miami Marlins got the pitchet his first win in 14 starts thanks to a poor mix of run support. He allowed just one unearned run on four hits in over six innings. His record was beginning to baffle the Dodgers considering he has a 1.67 ERA in his last six outings. A mix of pitches got the job done for the veteran and he looks to capitalize against the Mets whom he has not faced since 2009.
The Dodgers have won nine of their last 10 games against the Mets and that trend is likely to only get better considering New York is just 5-12 in the month of May. Their lineup is hitting just .188 while producing just 10 runs losing their last four of five games. Los Angeles is also struggling lately despite the strong pitching. They have dropped six of their last eight series.
The bright spot for the Dodgers has been Adrian Gonzalez. He went 4 for 4 with a two-run homer against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Dodgers are averaging 5.4 runs in their last eight games while going 4-4 in that stretch. However, the teams 37 errors leads the league.
The Mets will send up Rafael Montero who got his first start against the New York Yankees and is fighting to keep his spot while Dillon Gee works to come back. The youngster is one of the Mets top pitching prospects. He gave up three runs on five hits in his debut, but two of those were home runs.
