The Houston Texans made some major moves in the NFL draft this year and after picking Jadeveon Clowney number one, the team bypassed some of the bigger named quarterbacks for Pitt thrower Tom Savage and while he may be a solid option, one player who might be a bit frustrated is wideout Andre Johnson, who had a great year last season despite the team going 2-14 and with trade rumors floating around from earlier in the offseason, those could come up again with him absent from voluntary workouts.
The Houston Texans were mentioned in numerous trade rumors last season while going through their 14-game losing streak and Johnson was at the forefront of those. The wideout led the team in receiving and had a fantastic year despite the down season from Matt Schaub and the inexperience of Case Keenum and while he has played his entire career in Houston, he could be looking to get out if he feels frustrated about the QB situation. Johnson is a dynamic receiver and a good citizen so any type of deal is unlikely, but ESPN.com reporter Field Yates writes that Randy Harvey of the Houston Chronicle mentioned that Johnson could be and should be frustrated with the way the Texans attacked the draft.
The team had a no brainer in Clowney, but the team barely addressed their offense and while they got a nice tight end early in CJ Fiedorowicz and a guard in Xavier Su'a-Filo, the team did not seriously address some major holes. Savage could end up being the second coming of Tom Brady, but right now he is a player that transferred multiple times and does not have a ton of college experience compared to some other players and as Johnson gets older, he may not want to deal with being on a rebuilding team.
A deal for Johnson likely isn't happening after he put up 109 catches for 1,407 yards and five scores on a bad team, but it's one the Texans could consider if they feel they are a few years away from contending. The NFL is a worst to first league, but Savage is a project after passing for nearly 3,000 yards and 21 touchdowns last season, although Bill O'Brien loved that he was a prototypical 6-4, 228-pound QB. The Texans also picked Louis Nix III and that is looked at as a quality pick.
Johnson did not attend voluntary offseason workouts and while that isn't the end all be all, it's coming after the team went 2-14 and after the team is bringing in a new offense. One would think that the top WR would want to be with the team and the coaches when he could this offseason even if it's just voluntary. The Browns are an obvious option after they lost Josh Gordon, while the Raiders also could use an upgrade after being near the bottom of the league in receiver yards last season among their WRs.
