Mike D'Antoni Resigns From Lakers: Head Coach Steps Down As Steve Kerr, John Calipari Next Options?

Apr 30, 2014 10:05 PM EDT

Mike D'Antoni has stepped down as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers after a rough 2013-14 season and he has resigned from the team and now LA will have to find a new leader for Kobe Bryant and names like Steve Kerr, John Calipari and Jeff Van Gundy will be some of the first to come up in connection with the job, which could take some time to get filled.

According to ESPN.com, the Lakers announced the news on Wednesday night and now the team has to find a new head coach and it comes two years after he signed with the team. D'Antoni had one year on his contract left with a team option for the next year for $4 million and now he is out and GM Mitch Kupchak thanked D'Antoni for his hard work and now the coaching search will begin.

Kobe Bryant was out all season and the Lakers were beyond terrible and they had their worst 82-game record with just 27 wins and 55 losses and they did not look good doing it. Mike Brown was the previous head coach and now the Lakers are scrambling to get things together heading into the summer of 2014. The team now has some major questions moving forward and D'Antoni is out again after previously being fired by the Knicks.

The future of D'Antoni was speculated on for quite some time and now he will be out after coaching the team for two years and from the start it never felt like a fit and no it's over. The Lakers have made some blunders in recent years and while the Buff family is no Donald Sterling, boy they are starting to look just as inept, as they had the chance to hire Phil Jackson instead of D'Antoni, but instead they jilted Phil, letting him think he could consider the job for a weekend and went with Mike D and now he is out, so that was a pretty big waste and a boneheaded move.

Jackson is now with the Knicks and one head coach option the Lakers could have is one Jackson is setting his sights on, as Steve Kerr is one of the top names on the coaching market this year.
