The MLB standings for 2014 are taking shape heading into May and the division leaders with the best records in the AL and NL are setting themselves up going into the summer, as the New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers and San Francisco Giants are the early leaders in the baseball.

The season is starting to take shape with the first full month finishing up and the Yankees have taken the early lead in the AL East this season. The team won a series against the Red Sox and the Angels and the Yanks now are 15-10 on the season and they are 2.5 games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles in the division and they are .5 ahead of the Blue Jays. The division has the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays in the bottom of the division right now and they are just four games back right now and all four of the teams behind the Yankees have played well and could be in the mix for the division.

The AL Central has the Detroit Tigers in first place and that division has been one of the best in baseball this season, as the Indians are in last place by just three games. The Tigers have a one game lead over the Twins, while the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox are 1.5 games back right now. The Indians and the Tigers went to the playoffs last season and the Royals are coming back after a winning season, while the White Sox and Twins are playing much better than last season and that could make for a very interesting division race this season.

The AL West has the Oakland A's and the Texas Rangers in first place and they are 3.5 games ahead of the Angels right now. The Seattle Mariners are starting a series with the Yankees this week and they are 4.5 games back and two up on the lowly Astros in the division. Robinson Cano makes his first trip back to the Bronx as a member of the Mariners.

The Atlanta Braves are leading the NL East to start the season and they have a 3.5 game lead over the Mets and a four game lead over the National. The Phillies and the Marlins are pulling up the rear in the east and they are 4.5 and 6.5 games back. The NL Central will be very tough this season and the Milwaukee Brewers are the surprising early leaders. They are up over the Cardinals and the Reds, who each made the playoffs last season, while the Pirates have struggled after getting to the postseason last year.

The NL West is also tight at the top, as the Giants have a 1.5 game lead over the Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies. The Padres and the Diamondbacks are pulling up the bottom and the Dbacks are the worst team in baseball through April, with just eight wins and 20 losses and they are 8.5 games back.
