NFL Trade Rumors 2014: Colin Kaepernick For Johnny Manziel Draft Rights To 49ers After Sexual Assault? Oakland Raiders, Jim Harbaugh May Deal

Apr 11, 2014 03:59 PM EDT

The San Francisco 49ers are in a tough spot with quarterback Colin Kaepernick and it has nothing to do with his alleged sexual assault investigation and potential fallout, as he is asking for a record contract for a QB his age and now head coach Jim Harbaugh has some decision to make, as he has expressed his interest in Johnny Manziel and that could lead to a major trade with the Cleveland Browns that would give the team the chance to draft the star.

Now while this type of move is likely impossible and not even in the realm of possibility from happening, don't be mad at us for bringing it up, it actually was in an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, and it proposed that idea for Harbaugh. We'll take a look at and while it won't be going down, the new reports about Kaepernick being involved in a potential sexual assault puts it all in a new light. According to ESPN.com, Kaepernick said that the TMZ report about him in an incident in Miami that police were looking into was taken totally out of context and that no wrong doing occurred and while the police said that the sexual assault headline was taken and ran with by the media, it puts a harsh spotlight on Kaepernick and the team at a time when neither wants it.

The 49ers have 11 picks coming up in the draft and while Kaepernick has been excellent since Jim Harbaugh drafted him, there is another level he could go and Harbaugh might be ready to try something new and Manziel could be that option. Kaepernick wants nearly $20 million per season and now the Niners have to weigh the value of giving that to a quarterback who hasn't won a Super Bowl with what they want to build as a team. That much money could hamstring the Niners and if Harbaugh thinks that he can make Manziel a star, it could be an option for the team to look at.

Kaepernick is a star in the league and he has been to two straight championship games in the NFL and he has one Super Bowl appearance already and looks to be on the cusp of superstardom. This sexual assault issue could derail all of that, but just keeping it on the field, Kaepernick had another solid season for the Niners, but passing the ball he really wasn't that impressive. The team ranked near the bottom in the league in passing yards per game and Kaepernick only completed 58 percent of his passes. While he had over 3,000 yards and 21 touchdowns, he did not produce like some other NFL QBs and while he had over 500 yards rushing, that is something that will not always be there for him.

The report from ESPN says that police are looking into an incident involving Kaepernick along with 49ers wide receiver Quinton Patton and Seattle Seahawks receiver Ricardo Lockette and it says that it involved a woman and a hotel in downtown Miami. The woman said she had a relationship with Kaepernick and he came out to say what was mentioned about the incident was taken out of context and so far no arrests have been made and no charges have come up against Kaepernick. The team said it was aware of the situation and now it's just one month until the NFL draft.
