The Atlanta Braves are seeing the ugly side of injuries as the team is attempting to move on after losing two starting pitchers in back-to-back days. Kris Medlen officially underwent Tommy John surgery after reporting elbow pain after his last spring training start. The pitcher has already undergone recovery for the same injury once before and will now have to do so again.
On top of losing Medlen for the season, Brandon Beachy could be on his way out as well. Beachy has also already undergone Tommy John surgery once before. The pitcher essentially suffered the same injury as Medlen in his last spring training start. While it has yet to be determined if Beachy will officially undergo his second procedure, he is meeting with Dr. James Andrews which is never a good sign.
As a result, the Braves have been forced to sign Ervin Santana to a one-year contract. He sat on the market for some time after his contract demands were too high. Now his joins on with Atlanta who hope he is as good as he thinks he is. There is still uncertainty in the starting rotation after the two injuries which is where spring training helps. David Hale will get the start for the Braves against the New York Yankees. He is one of the young guns in the running to fill a void in the rotation. Alex Wood is also another option.
Facing the Yankees means facing off against for Atlanta star Brian McCann. The pitcher signed on with New York in the offseason during free agency. The Braves failed to make a reasonable offer, leaving the catcher to look elsewhere. One of the best in the game, the Yankees gave him a marquee deal too good to turn down.
