NBA Free Agent Rumors: Glen Davis Option For Miami Heat After Orlando Magic Buyout and Trade? LA Clippers, Rockets Favorites

Feb 20, 2014 09:34 PM EST

The Miami Heat basically stood pat at the trading deadline on Thursday, as they traded away Roger Mason Jr. to the Sacramento Kings, but that opened up a roster spot and now that Glen Davis is heading for a buyout with the Orlando Magic, he could be the latest addition to the team, while reports have the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets as the favorites to land him.

According to Yahoo Sports, Glen Davis is working on a buyout with the Magic and the move is expected to made official on Friday. The report says that the Los Angeles Clippers are the current favorite to sign Davis and the Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, Trail Blazers and Dallas Mavericks are all considered options as well, as they need help in the frontcourt.

Davis comes into things after averaging 12.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists this season and he is making $13 million over the next two seasons and he could be a coveted player on the market. Teams in tough salary cap situations will try to sign him on a cheap deal and Davis could be motivated to sign with a winning team since there are just over 30 games left on the schedule for most teams after the All-Star break.

Davis has experience with the Boston Celtics and he could be a potential option for the Miami Heat, as that could be a move that counters what the Indiana Pacers did with Andrew Bynum. The Heat have Greg Oden, but he is still a major question mark and heading into the playoffs Miami will have to beef up and the move is similar to what the Heat did with Chris Andersen and Birdman turned out to be a very valuable addition as the team won a second straight championship.

Miami played it cool at the All-Star break and trading deadline, only moving Roger Mason and cash to the Kings and in return they got a "highly protected" second round pick. The deal came late and the Kings waived Mason afterwards and now the Heat have room for a free agent and that could be Davis. The team isn't losing much, as Mason averaged three points this season in 25 games.
