Miami Dolphins Rumors: LeGarrette Blount Top Free Agent Target as Patriots Contract Negotiations Stall, Knowshon Moreno, Darren McFadden Options to Help Ryan Tannehill

The run game for the Miami Dolphins was not the same last season without Reggie Bush in the backfield. After saying goodbye to the running back in free agent, the Dolphins intended to get younger legs in the huddle, something that resulted in nothing but injuries. As Ryan Tannehill embarks on a critical third year as the starting quarterback, the Dolphins are looking at some big free agent names to help out.

According to the Miami Herald, LeGarrette Blount could be at the top of the team's free agent list. The current New England Patriots running back is set to become a free agent in March and after a successful 2013 season, he could be in for a pay increase.

Blount put up 772 yards and seven touchdowns during the regular season while being a part of a three-man rotation. He emerged as a true threat in the postseason, helping Tom Brady in tough situations.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports the Patriots intend to bring back Blount, but for the right price. The two sides have begun to discuss a contract extension as the running back could be poised to year somewhere around $3 million per season over three to four years.

The Dolphins like what they see in Blount and could offer him a lot of money to come to Florida. The Miami Herald notes the team plans on being aggressive in free agency this season and it all starts with the running back position.

Last season, the Dolphins first relied on Daniel Thomas who got injured part-way through the year. Lamar Miller stepped in and did enough to get by, but is not a strong option going forward. The Dolphins also had Marcus Thigpen who say very little action outside of being a return man.

If the Dolphins are unable to persuade Blount to leave New England, there are still a few options of top running backs available. The first could be Denver Broncos star Knowshon Moreno. The Broncos have Montee Ball as an option so they might not be inclined to through a lot of money towards Moreno whereas the Dolphins are willing to spend.

Darren McFadden could also be an option. The Raiders running back will be released to free agency in March. His value is certainly nowhere near as high as Moreno's considering his injury history. But, McFadden will come cheap and a change of scenery might be all he needs to get going.
