Boston Celtics Rumors: Rajon Rondo, Danny Ainge Negotiate Contract Extension, PG Seeks Max Deal as Free Agency 2015 Option with Trade Unlikely Before Deadline

"Where in the world is Rajon Rondo." That should really be the title of the NBA trading period because the Boston Celtics point guard appears to be the center piece of major trade package out there. These rumors have been present ever since Boston dismantled the Big 3 and sent Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Doc Rivers packing in the offseason. Would Rondo be the next to go? According to Danny Ainge, that is a confirmed no.

While making an appearance on Boston sports radio 98.5 the SportsHub, Ainge noted that instead of discussing trade details with Rondo, they have been talking contract extensions. The point guard is set to become a free agent in 2015. Many speculate if he will still be on the team by then or will want to remain in Boston for the long-term as the team works through a rebuilding phase.

"We did talk to Rondo about extending him," Ainge said. "But that's all part of the negotiation that will happen again this summer and most likely the summer after. In the collective bargaining agreement, there are limits on what can and can't be done. Really, it's not that Rondo doesn't want to accept an extension, as much as it's just not financially smart for him to accept it right now. We didn't think he would [sign], but we did try."

Ainge is very aware that Rondo will be in high demand come free agency that summer. He believes the competition will be high considering the number of players that will be available and he predicts the point guard could land a massive contract. According to Ainge, the Celtics will still be able to re-sign him.

Rondo is set to finish out his five-year, $55 million deal signed back in October of 2009 next season. According to the new CBA, there are limits to the length and value of a possible extension at the summer which will not be as relevant come next season. Rondo can sign a much larger contract next summer instead of now.

Take Ainge's words with a grain of salt. He did once state that the Celtics would not be making any moves at the trade deadline and they have already completed one deal and could be seeking out another. In order to build a core around Rondo, Ainge is seeking to trade for center Omer Asik, offering up Jeff Green in the process. Sources say the Celtics view Rondo and Asik as the perfect combo to build around.
