Seattle Mariners Rumors: Ervin Santana Free Agent Signing Possible After David Price Trade Interest

The Seattle Mariners may stop spending this offseason after signing Robinson Cano, but some reports have the team looking into free agent pitcher Ervin Santana, who is looking for a long term deal and could be a better option for the team than pulling off a trade for David Price.

No one will argue that Santana is better than Price, but trading for Price from the Rays would take a top prospect and the Mariners have already said they will not be trading Taijuan Walker. According to Ken Rosenthal on Fox Sports, the Mariners are planning to slow down on spending after signing Cano to a 10-year, $240 million contract and he says that would be a mistake, as it would be wasting the prime years of the Cano contract.

Reports have come out that the Mariners could be interested in Santana, as the team has been showing "continued interest" in the free agent pitcher. The Mariners likely will not sign Santana, as he is looking for a $100 million deal, but it could signal that the team is interested in adding a pitcher like Matt Garza or one of the lower level names on the market. Santana's report about a $100 million deal was from earlier in the offseason and it could be lowered as of now, but that doesn't mean he isn't asking for a lot.

Santana is 31 years old and is coming off of a season that saw him put up a 3.24 ERA with 161 strikeouts in 211 innings and his record was 9-10 last year for the Royals.
