NFL Free Agency: Patriots Make Julian Edelman Contract Extension Priority in 2014 as Aqib Talib Seeks Darrelle Revis Size Deal in Offseason

The New England Patriots got Julian Edelman at bargain basement prices when they gave him a contract extension in the 2013 offseason. In return, the wide receiver has become the best offensive threat for the team as he closes in on his first career 1,000-yard season. After the departure of Wes Welker, Edelman has become the receiver the Patriots thought Danny Amendola would be. Now, a new deal will be a priority for the team.

Through Week 15, Edelman has 89 catches for 914 yards and six touchdowns. As injuries have hampered the production of big-contract free agent Amendola, Edelman has jumped up as the best receiver on the Patriots' roster. After five up and down seasons, stat experts have the receiver on pace to put up 1,045 yards and seven scores. That would eclipse all stats in Edelman's career so far.

Right now, Edelman is essentially making minimum wage in the NFL. The receiver is working off a one-year contract worth $765,000. He could reach $1.015 million if he hits certain unattainable performance bonuses as no money in his current deal is guaranteed. Was there a better deal in free agency this year? No. Now, Edelman will likely be looking to get paid come the 2014 offseason.

If the Patriots are smart, a contract extension will be a priority. He clearly has chemistry with Brady and the uncertainty regarding Amendola's health should be a cause for concern. Amendola got a five-year, $28.5 million contract that is guaranteed through next year. Edelman could sign something in the ball park of that, depending what they decide to do with other free-agent-to-be starters.

Aqib Talib is the other big-named free agent set to possibly hit the market in 2014. The defensive star is currently fifth among all defensive backs with four interceptions and 17 passes defended. Those numbers might not sound impressive, but noting that Talib did them all in the first half of the season before suffering a hip injury.

Injury history could seriously slash Talib's worth to the Patriots, but the cornerback will likely get his extension as well. The going rate for a top cornerback in the league is $8 million, a bar set by Joe Haden and Champ Bailey. That is probably too high for a veteran like Talib.

Edelman will be the priority. After severe inconsistencies on offense this season, bringing back the wide receiver will be key. Fans can expect both players back in uniform next season. New England will likely have learned from their Wes Welker mistake.
