NFL News and Rumors: Jon Gruden, Lovie Smith Options For Houston Texans After Gary Kubiak Fired?

Dec 06, 2013 01:32 PM EST

The Houston Texans have decided to fire Gary Kubiak as the team lost its 11th straight game of the season and at 2-11 the team is looking like they will clinch the number one pick in the draft and this comes after the team made the playoffs last season.

According to ESPN.com, Kubiak was fired after having a terrible season and now the team will keep Wade Phillips as the interim head coach, as he had taken over after Kubiak suffered a health scare. The team just lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars for the second time in three weeks and now the team will move on with a new head coach. According to Pro Football Talk, the team will look at Lovie Smith as an option and naturally Jon Gruden will also get some talk about a possibility. The team may blow things up and start over next season and they have dealt with injuries to Arian Foster and others as well.

The struggling Houston Texans have fired head coach Gary Kubiak, the National Football League team said on Friday in the midst of a franchise-record 11-game losing streak.

The decision comes a day after Houston lost to Jacksonville to fall to 2-11, a huge swing from last season when they went 12-4 and won the AFC South Division.

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will serve as interim coach for the Texans' final four games of the 2013 season, the team said in a statement. Kubiak, who went 61-64 since taking the head coaching job in 2006 and led the Texans to two playoff appearances, missed time earlier this season after collapsing at halftime during a game last month.
