Robinson Cano is on everybody's wishlist, but realistically, the best second baseman in baseball will only attract a few offers from few. His price tag has dropped, but he will likely be the highest paid player this offseason. By when will the New York Yankees have a deal ready? Rumors have Cano signing after the 2013 Winter Meetings.
The longer the Yankees wait, the better it will be for their pockets. The winter meetings will take place in December, somewhere tropical, and all general managers and owners will sit and analyze their needs, while simultaneously finding out what other teams are searching for during the offseason. Usually, free agents are signed during the Winter Meetings, with trades coming later. The Yankees do not have much to offer, so trading will likely be done by other organizations. Their main concern should be resigning Cano.
The $305 million deal Cano sought is out the window. However, other clubs will now have a chance to lure Cano. Those thought to be in play include the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers and maybe even the Philadelphia Phillies. However, with Jay-Z by his side, many are predicting the Dominican ball player will stay in New York. The Yankees want to stay at a budget, but with Cano now the face of the franchise, the Yankees will have no other choice but to pay up.
Other glaring needs in the Bronx include the Yankees' outfield. Curtis Granderson could become a free agent and if he departs, the Yankees will once again be without a power bat in their lineup. No power in the Bronx means less tickets and money in the owners' pockets. Credit Brian Cashman for the reconstructing and piecing that he did last season as Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and Granderson were out of the lineup for most of the season.
If 2013 has taught the Yankees anything, especially in Rodriguez's case, it's to be weary of long term signings. What if Teixeira continues to get hurt? He is under contract for another four seasons. Rodriguez is a mess and frankly, it is best if the Yankees are without him. However, Rodriguez will continue the drama as he will continue to fight his case against MLB.
So many distractions, but the focus will always be Cano, especially during the winter. Chances are the Yankees will not have to worry about being outbid. The question on everybody's mind is how much will Cano cost. Hang in there until December. Until then, enjoy your turkey.
