Trade rumors are predictable when someone is injured and his backup is playing better with each week. Fred Davis is certainly learning this lesson the hard way as the tight end is facing trade talks with the deadline approaching in less than a week. The Washington Redskins tight end remains injured and Mike Shanahan confirms the team is considering all options.
Davis has been inactive for the past two weeks as he continues to battle his health and injuries. In his place, Jordan Reed has developed into a strong rookie with a bright future. The backup put up 134 yards on nine catches and one touchdown against a tough Chicago Bears defense. Robert Griffin III was 9 for 9 when targeting Reed, leaving uncertainly around Davis.
According to the Washington Post, head coach Mike Shanahan confirms the team is weighing options in regards to Davis' future. The team would certainly like to stalk up on some draft picks and they could get a favorable deal for the veteran.
"That's what people do when you make a decision if you think you need a draft choice, or if you think that person can help you later in the year, especially with an injury," Shanahan said, via the Washington Post. "The thing I think that Fred has done, is he had an excellent week of practice. Any time people compete, you feel good about who they are and what they do."
The deadline to make any trade is next Thursday. Davis said that for him, he has not requested any sort of trade from the Redskins. He is simply focused on getting healthy and getting back to being productive on the field for his team.
"I didn't request anything," Davis said, via 106.7 The Fan in D.C. "I mean, I thought everything was going the right way. I thought everything was pretty good preseason and heading into the season, and other than that, I guess they just feel they had a better option in Jordan [Reed] and Logan [Paulsen] playing, and I wish I could help the team any way I could. I know for sure I know I can whenever I get an opportunity, but it just hasn't been the case these few games I haven't been playing."
Davis is not naïve to the fact that a trade is certainly possible in the coming week. He said that really he just prefers to play, no matter where it is. The veteran is convinced that he can be a productive teammate despite his age and injury history. He is just hopeful that he continues to get an opportunity for the remainder of the year.
