MLB Playoff Standings: Red Sox Lead World Series, Besting Cards in Game 1 of the World Series

The St. Louis Cardinals tied the series 1-1. Check out Game 2 summary.

The Boston Red Sox are probably the luckiest team in baseball. They have been, at least, for the ALCS and now the 2013 World Series. As the MLB Playoff Standings show, the Red Sox are up on the St. Louis Cardinals as the N.L. Champions could not play solid defense. The Red Sox now own a 1-0 lead in the series after the Cardinals could not get easy outs.

There were three errrors made in Game 1 and all three errors led to runs and big innings for the Red Sox. In the bottom of the first, it was Pete Kozma not catching a flip at second on a potential inning-ending double play. That cost the Cardinals three runs. In the following inning, it was Kozma again and this time, Dustin Pedroia made the Cardinals pay with a base hit that plated a run, followed by a David Ortiz sacrifice fly that should have left the ball park. The Red Sox only managed two runs off the second Kozma error, but it game them a 5-0 lead. Ortiz made the Cardinals pay later in the game after David Freese committed a throwing error, that mistake also allowed two runs to score as Big Papi went deep to right, this time successfully clearing the Red Sox's bullpen.

There was nothing fun or funny for the Cardinals since the errors led to their loss. Matt Holliday provided the only run of the game with a Green Monster-clearing home run. The Cardinals were sloppy on defense and they could not take advantage of their opportunities as the Red Sox's pitching proved tougher than ever. The Red Sox finished with eight hits, the Cardinals had seven, meaning St. Louis also had their chances to score runs.

Jon Lester led the way for the Red Sox's pitching staff, pitching comfortably into the eighth, going 7.2 innings of scoreless baseball. With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Lester got the double play as Freese hit a one-hopper right to the mound. Lester and his personal catcher, David Ross, turned the cool inning-ending double play to end the threat.

Adam Wainwright did not have his best stuff in Game 1 as the righty could not get outs at the plate or on the field. Stephen Drew popped up a few yards from the mound and Wainwright could not field the ball after calling everybody off. That ignited the Red Sox's bottom half of the second and Boston was merciless as they tacked run after every mistake.

The Playoff Standings show the Red Sox are now on top 1-0. They also show that the Red Sox are now 5-1 at Fenway Park and 8-3 in the 2013 MLB Postseason.
