Who Is Throwing Out First Pitch For Game 2 World Series?

Oct 23, 2013 11:02 AM EDT

The first game of the World Series is finally here on Wednesday and the Boston Red Sox will be hosting Game 1 at Fenway Park as the St. Louis Cardinals visit and Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski will be throwing out the first pitch for the Major League Baseball championship and the game will be on FOX and he will be throwing it around 8:00 pm.

Yastrzemski of course is a former Triple Crown winner and he was the man who was last to achieve that feat until Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera did it last season. Yastrzemski is a Hall of Fame player that spent over 20 years with the Red Sox and was hugely successful, hitting a very respectable .285 for his career with over 3,400 hits to join the 3K Hit Club and he also hit over 450 home runs, showing off both power and average skills throughout his career. Yaz as many liked to call him was one of the best players in Red Sox history and he will be starting things off for Boston at Fenway Park on Wednesday night.

Yastrzemski went to the All-Star game a ridiculous 18 times and he also won an MVP award the same year he pulled off the Triple Crown, which was in 1967 and was the last time any player in the AL did until 2012. Yastrzemski was a great fielder with multiple Gold Gloves throughout his career and he played in two World Series without winning one, later helping raise the flags for the 2004 championship that broke the Red Sox curse streak. Yastrzemski has already been good luck for the team this year, as the Red Sox honored the Hall of Fame player earlier this season at Fenway Park.

Back in September Boston brought him back to the stadium and unveiled a statue that depicted him tipping his cap back when he played his final game as a Red Sox player. The team is in the World Series after missing the playoffs for three straight seasons and they haven't won the World Series since that magical stretch years ago. The Red Sox were the best team in the American League and it's a place fans thought the team would never be after the collapse in 2011 and the terrible season in 2012.

The matchup of the Cardinals and Red Sox in Game 1 has Adam Wainwright going up against Jon Lester in a battle of aces and Yastrzemski will be the first man to throw a pitch for the World Series for the game on Wednesday night at Fenway Park and he is sure to get a nice ovation. For the first time in over a decade, the World Series will have the two best teams playing each other, as the Cardinals and Red Sox each won their divisions with the best records in the National and American Leagues respectively.

The games will air on FOX for the World Series in 2013 and will be on ESPN Radio for the duration and in Game 2 it will be young star Michael Wacha for the Cardinals and John Lackey for the Boston Red Sox.
