The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in a game dominated by defense. Alex Smith and the Chiefs were able to do something the Eagles could not and that was keeping the ball.
Alex Smith and Jamaal Charles kept the Chiefs perfect, making plays when they mattered most. Smith hit receivers in third down late in the game, moving the chains to close out the game, while Charles also helped move the chains and burn the clock. Smith finished with 273 passing yards after going 22/35. He threw no touchdowns and no interceptions. Charles rushed for 92 yards and a score, while grabbing seven passes for 80 yards. It was an explosive performance in a big win for the Chiefs.
On defense, Justin Houston put on a show. He finished the night with two fumble recoveries and 4.5 sacks. One of the interceptions of the game was returned for a 38-yard touchdown by Eric Berry.
The first half was a disaster for the Eagles. Michael Vick had two interceptions and the Eagles had a total of four turnovers. The Chiefs made their plays on defense, yet they could not take full advantage of these turnovers. It was a different looking offense than the one they showed in the first two weeks of the NFL. They looked like themselves one drive led by Vick's 61-yard dash. However, they did not keep the momentum going later in the game.
The Chiefs were able to disrupt Vick, forcing him to scramble and miss receiver. Vick was only 5/12 at the half with one touchdown pass. He rushed for 85 yards, leading the Eagles' offense. However, his passing game was truly off.
In the second quarter, the running backs and spectacular took place. Charles took over the game, getting back-to-back runs that wound up in the end zone. Answering right back as they faced a two touchdown deficit, the Eagles gave the ball to LeSean McCoy, who took it to the house for the 41-yard score.
Earlier in the game, McCoy was inactive following a knee injury. Linebacker Akeem Jordan fell on McCoy's right leg, injuring the running in the second quarter. He eventually returned in the third quarter to a round of applause.
Prior to McCoy's 41-yard score, it was Jason Avant with a diving tip to record the first down and keep the chains moving for the Eagles. Though they had the flair for the dramatic, Smith of the Chiefs was able to shut the door. The Eagles are now 1-2 in the season after an exciting beginning to their year. The Chiefs are 3-0 and they appear to be the real deal.
