The BMW Championship finished on Monday after a very long weather rain delay and with Zach Johnson taking the victory, Tiger Woods was left on top of the FedEx Cup Standings heading into the next tournament in Atlanta.
Woods was in contention heading into the final round in Lake Forest at the BMW championship, but he couldn't gain any ground on the last day in some soggy conditions and ended up finishing in 11th place. According to the main website for the cup, Woods is now in the top place for the FedEx Cup, as he has played in 12 events and has 3,059 points after winning five events and finishing in the top 10 seven times.
Woods has a nice lead heading into the next tournament and he has a nearly 800 point lead over Matt Kuchar, who is in second place after winning twice on tour this year and amassing 2,293 points. Brandt Snedeker is next on the points list ahead of Phil Mickelson and then in fifth place is Bill Haas. The rest of the top 10 includes Billy Horschel, Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth, Henrik Stenson and Keegan Bradley, who is just ahead of Adam Scott after playing in 21 events this year.
Woods finished on the PGA leaderboard seven strokes behind the winner after fading on the final day and Johnson ended up winning the tournament after shooting a six-under-65 for the tournament. Johnson overtook Jim Furyk on the final day after he was leading the tournament after three rounds and this came after he made some history. Furyk was on fore earlier in the week, hitting a round of 59 on Friday to tie the world record, but it wasn't enough to seal the victory come Sunday.
The delay may have thrown Furyk off, but from the start things did not go that well, as he finished in third place after hitting a 71 and that came after he started off with two bogeys over his first five holes on the last day. The weather delay pushed Furyk back and he ended up finishing four strokes off the leader by the end of things.
Woods was able to move into the top spot for the FedEx standings after coming into the tournament in second place and if he performs well next week, he could clinch the title. If Woods wins, or one of the other top five ranked players, they will cling the Cup and the $10 million check that goes with it and while he has made plenty already, Woods is looking for more next week.
Woods spoke to reporters after the tournament and said he felt good, but now it is in his hands as he can clinch the title by simply winning next week in Atlanta at the Tour Championship.
