David Wilson’s 3 Career Fumbles Have All Come Against the Dallas Cowboys, RB Has Never Fumbled Against Anyone Else and Won’t Again In 2013 (SWR Commentary)

New York Giants running back David Wilson has been put on notice by the team and coach Tom Coughlin after coughing up two fumbles against the Cowboys in the opening week of the season, but while everyone thinks Wilson has a bad fumbling problem, they might be surprised to know he has only fumbled in two games in his entire career and has only lost three fumbles: all against the Cowboys.

Wilson has been given the stigma that he has a fumbling problem and while he obviously does after he fumbled twice in the opening game against the Cowboys, the only three times he has fumbled in his career have come in season openers. Wilson has 78 carries in his career and just three fumbles, one coming last season in the first game of the season, while his other two came in Week of this season. Last year Wilson was placed in the dog house after fumbling, but after that, he didn't fumble for the rest of the season and he also did not fumble on 57 kickoff attempts last season as well.

Wilson obviously has some issues and with Brandon Jacobs coming back to the team he will lose some carries, but the fumbles likely were more about nerves than talent and now that it happened, he has the chance to move on. Wilson is an electric running back and went over 120 touches last season without fumbling again, but until he proves to the team he can do it on a consistent basis, he will have some trouble getting back on the field.

The Giants know they need to use him as a running back after Andre Brown broke his leg and with Jacobs coming back the running game could end up working much better. Wilson was a first round pick and the Giants love his talent, but if his fumbling continues, he won't be trusted with the ball. The team had an issue in the past with Tiki Barber and he became one of the best ball protectors in the league and now Wilson is the next on that list.

Wilson went at some fans on Twitter, but after things calm down and the team plays the Denver Broncos this weekend, he will get the chance to get back on the field again and will prove that he can hold onto the ball. Like last season when he fumbled against the Cowboys and didn't again last season, he will do it again this year and not fumble after the opening game. At least the G-Mean hope so.
