After a strong performance Thursday night, New England Patriots backup quarterback Tim Tebow has earned a roster spot on the depth chart as the third string.

Thursday Tebow played the entire second half of the Patriots final preseason game and he wasn't bad. He wasn't good either (6-for-11, two TDs, one interception).

Coach Bill Bill Belichick hasn't taken a third-string quarterback in three of the previous four years, but seems ready to break that trend.

"All players have different skill sets and some guys do some things better than others. You have to look at the total package and what they're able to do in all areas of the game," coach Bill Belichick said when asked about Tebow. "I don't think there's one specific style you have to have or don't have to have. In the end, it's about production and being able to do enough things to be successful."

ebow has shown signs of the combination of abilities that elevated him becoming a starter for the Denver Broncos two years ago.

"I worry about what I can control, not listening to outside influences," Tebow said. "It's my attitude and my effort and getting better every day and just staying focused."

Tebow didn't earn a starting spot on Thursday. He didn't earn a backup spot either. But he did earn the role.

Tebow will be the third-string quarterback for the New England Patriots.
