Chargers Rumors: San Diego Needs WR Help After 33-28 Chicago Bears Loss and Injuries, Brandon Lloyd, Devin Thomas, Mike Sims-Walker Free Agent Options?

The San Diego Chargers are heading into the 2013 season with some big needs at wide receiver after dealing with a number of injuries and it was evident on Thursday night in the 33-28 loss to the Chicago Bears on the presentation of Monday Night Football in Week 2 of the preseason.

The team already lost Danario Alexander for the year to a knee injury and with Malcom Floyd out until possibly Week 2 of the regular season, the team needs help at the position. The Chargers have Robert Meachem, Eddie Royal and Vincent Brown as well as rookie Keenen Allen, but they need more depth at the position and some options include Brandon Lloyd, Devin Thomas, Mike Sims-Walker and Laurent Robinson.

Philip Rivers is looking to have a better season than last year and without his top receivers that will be much tougher and that could mean a dependence on the running game or tight ends instead. Rivers had some issues against the Bears, losing a fumble, throwing a pick and getting sacked and part of that was due to the offensive line. Last season it was a mess and with the additions of Max Starks and DJ Fluker, things should be much improved. Starks ended up starting over King Dunlap in the second preseason game and the two have been battling all summer.

Fluker was fantastic in run blocking and the team is hoping that will continue. Ryan Mathews will need to stay healthy and he has looked good so far in the preseason. New head coach Mike McCoy is trying to open up the offense and despite scoring 28 points there is still plenty of work to do. The team got some nice play from quarterback Brad Sorensen, who threw for 127 yards and touchdown and now the team is moving forward to the third preseason game.

Lloyd should be a prime option as a free agent and he made over 70 catches last season for the Patriots. The team released him and signed Danny Amendola and now he is a free agent waiting for a team to sign.
