Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has implored the Red Devils not to sell Wayne Rooney to Chelsea or any other club this summer.

Rooney has been constantly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with Jose Mourinho making his intentions clear on landing the England international.

The Blues have already seen two bids rejected by United but are ready to continue their pursuit of the 27-year-old right until the end of the transfer window.

Yorke believes selling Rooney to Chelsea would be a huge mistake. "I just simply feel that United can't afford to let him leave," Yorke told Sky Sports. "Not just to Chelsea but to anybody, I think he is that valuable a player.

"He is 27, he is coming into his peak. The next four years are a vital part of his career. I feel there is much more to come from him.

"I feel he just wants to play the game and he has not been able to play it in the way he likes. That free spirit, that go and play, express yourself attitude.

"You are talking about someone who, for the last five years before Robin Van Persie came to the club, you couldn't stop talking about.

"The performances week in and week out, the spectacular goals, where has that gone in the space of a year? He's only 27.

"He wants to feel wanted, every player wants to feel loved and wanted. Until that is reinstalled into his belief, you won't see the best of him.

"That's up to the manager. That's why he is getting paid the big bucks. Once Rooney is in the position to do that, this will be his best year.

"There is a new era starting and it is up to David Moyes to convince him to stay and want him to play week in, week out."
