Atlanta Falcons Rumors: Steven Jackson, Jacquizz Rodgers Make Versatile Pair, Mike Smith Praises Dynamic Offense as Veteran Upgrade from Michael Turner

The Michael Turner era in Atlanta is long gone. After the Falcons parted ways with the long-time running back, they acquired veteran Steven Jackson who is proving age is simply a number. Alongside third-year back Jacquizz Rodgers, Jackson is proving to be a significant upgrade from Turner despite both players reaching the older end of the average age of an NFL player. As the Falcons continue on with training camp, both Jackson and Rodgers are getting work in on all sides of the field.

When the Falcons signed Jackson, many wondered if the team was just trading in one retired running back for another. Would Jackson really prove to be worth the money at his age? So far into training camp, he is looking like his younger self, lining up at running back, tailback and wide receiver during drills.

Atlanta is hoping to get creative with their offensive attack this season. With Julio Jones and Roddy White taking care of the outside and tight end Tony Gonzalez manning the middle, Jackson and Rodgers are set to own the ground game. Until Falcons writer Daniel Cox reported that Jackson had been taking snaps as a wide receiver during practice and getting involved in one-on-one situations with linebackers. This kind of situation is not new to the former St. Louis back.

"It reminds me of my younger years in St. Louis when I was used more as a receiver out of the backfield," Jackson said. "It allows me to use more tools in the shed that I have and possess. It allows me to work on things I haven't done in a number of years."

Jackson believes this set up will be perfect for the Falcons. While both Jones and White will attract a lot of attention, the running back can step in as a target for quarterback Matt Ryan. When Jackson lines up as a receiver, Rodgers is there as the running back. The Falcons are trying to limit the rushing load on Jackson and since both backs have quality hands, they add another layer to the offensive attack.

When Jackson was first signed, Rodgers was unsure what his role with the team would be. After playing backup to Turner, would he continue that role with the Falcons? Rodgers has adjusted to being one of the more versatile players on the roster. Not only is he handling running and catching duties, but he will also be one of the primary kick returners for the team this season. Rodgers is enjoying having Jackson around for veteran advice. The Falcons are loving it too.
