After a disappointing performance in Bangkok in their first preseason game of the season, David Moyes and Manchester United will hope for a better result when they take on A-League All Stars in Sydney Saturday.

United lost 1-0 to a Singha All Star XI in Bangkok last week, but Moyes is confident his side can put up a more improved performance this time around.

"I want to see us step up from where we were in Thailand," Moyes said. "I thought in general our fitness was fine in difficult conditions but I want to see the play improve.

"We had opportunities to score and I'd like to see that improve. We also gave away a few chances to the opposition in the first half, which I didn't like, and I want that to improve as well.

"We're heading towards Swansea City on the first day of the season and, a week before that, the Community Shield. Saturday's game is important but it's not the most important thing in the overall picture."

The pitch is not expected to be too great at the ANZ Stadium, but Moyes is not too concerned about the conditions.

"I've not had a chance to see the pitch yet," he added. "There is a concern maybe that the ground wouldn't be the best, but it's the same for both teams and that's the way we look at it.

"These footballers have been brought up from young boys, playing on different types of surfaces throughout the world in their own countries. Whatever's there won't be a surprise to me or the players."

Assistant coach Phil Neville believes it is vital for United to come through with a victory against the A-League All Stars.

"The expectation is we've got to win," Neville told MUTV. "We lost in Thailand the other day and Manchester United have to win every game we play in.

"Every time we play someone, they want to knock us and beat us and it's something the manager will have to get used to even more. It's the Manchester United way.

"But the foundations that were left are solid and strong. The club is in unbelievable shape with a young squad and experience at the top end that can keep on passing on the right messages."

Robin Van Persie has returned to the United squad and is expected to be given a run out in the second half of the game.
