Emanuele Giaccherini is set for a move to Sunderland, after Juventus manager Antonio Conte revealed the Italian champions had "reluctantly" accepted a bid from the English Premier League side in order to balance the books.

The Italian international was impressive for his country at the Confederations Cup but has found it difficult to regularly break into the Juve first team, prompting a move away.

"Giaccherini was valued, they offered him an important contract," Conte said.

"I'm happy for him but unhappy for me.

"I'm not happy with the sale of Giaccherini but in times of crisis when you buy you must also make sacrifices."

Sunderland have been extremely busy this transfer window, bringing in seven players already, and with Gino Peruzzi also thought to be closing in on a move from Velez Sarsfield, Paolo Di Canio will be happy to see his side strengthened considerably ahead of the new season.

Meanwhile, Di Canio expressed his satisfaction after Sunderland posted a 3-1 win over a select XI in a preseason game at the club's training base in Italy.

The game saw six of the new summer signings get a run out, including one for American international Jozy Altidore, who earlier this week sealed his switch from AZ Alkmaar.

"I'm absolutely happy about the performance because it's the first game with many new faces on the field," Di Canio told the club's official website.

"(On Wednesday morning) we worked so hard, including a few reps of 800 meters, so the players were heavy in the legs but I'm very satisfied with the performance.

"I saw the movement that I want to see and many, many positive things from this game."

Di Canio has been pushing his players to the limit during training sessions and the Italian is determined to ensure his side are 100 percent fit ahead of the new English Premier League season.

"I'm very happy. It's typical and happened to me when I was very young and used to play in preseason, even being a good professional," he added.

"I remember when you used to run a lot and moan and not enjoy, but it's important that they know they need to do (it). We have a long season and a lot of battles (ahead).

"The fitter they are, the more chance they have to win games because their quality and physical condition can support them to play at the top level.

"I don't expect them to be smiling before the running session but so far they've done a fantastic job and I have only positive things to say about their attitudes, so I'm very pleased."
