With 11 defeats from 31 games, lying eighth in the table--behind bitter rivals Everton--after a run of six defeats in their last seven games, there are clearly many problems at Anfield.
But perhaps chief among the club's issues this season has been there inability to convert chances.
Particularly at home, Liverpool have struggled desperately to turn their possession and territorial superiority into goals. A paltry 19 goals have been scored by the Reds at Anfield in the Premier League this campaign--the same as bottom-club Wolves.
And it is the players in forward positions who have to take much of the blame for the scarcity of goals. Liverpool have taken 477 shots in their league season and hit the back of the net with a mere 36 of them. To put that stat into context, Manchester United have had nine fewer shots than their arch-rivals and yet scored 76 times, more than double Liverpool's total.
While there are many reasons for this failure, including the seeming lack of any consistent strategy for how to play, the Reds' forwards must also take a large chunk of the blame.
Andy Carroll, clearly the man whom the club hoped would lead the Liverpool line for years to come, has failed miserably in his year-plus on Merseyside. His outburst after being substituted against Newcastle on Sunday has called into question whether the 23-year-old will be around at Anfield much longer to try and find his scoring boots.
There are also doubts over the future of Luis Suarez. An unquestionnably terrifically talented player he maybe, but the controversies he has caused this season may make the club reconsider whether he is worth the hassle. Especially as the Uruguayan has only scored seven goals in 24 league outings this campaign.
Then there is Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy, neither of whom have ever been prolific and appear much more useful in wide areas than charged with the responsibility of regularly contributing to the goal scoring column.
So, with all that in mind, here are a look at 10 forwards who Liverpool should target in an attempt to alleviate their scoring woes and help lift the club back into Champions League contention next season.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar
The prolific Dutchman is having the best season of his career after already notching up an incredible 42 goals in just 41 games in all competitions for German club Schalke.
After short-lived disappointing spells with Real Madrid and Milan, at 28, it could be that the time is now for Huntelaar to truly excel on the big stage.
Whether he thinks the stage on offer at Anfield is of sufficient grandeur, with Schalke looking likely to gain Champions League qualification, remains to be seen.
Leandro Damiao
After being linked with a move in January, Liverpool could reignite their interest in Brazilian front man Leandro Damiao. The 22-year-old has amassed an incredible scoring record in the past year for his club side Internacional and has also already opened his account for Brazil.
Physically strong and a good finisher, Damiao is perhaps just lacking top class link-up play to complete his game.
Tottenham have long-been admirers of the 6’1” forward and Liverpool would face a tough battle to convince him to join the latest Liverpool revolution.
Roberto Soldado
The Valencia hit-man has become one of he most consistent goal scorers in Spain having amassed 20-plus goals in his past three seasons. This campaign he has already surpassed his previous best goal return with 26 already in the bag.
The 26-year-old also looks set to make the trip to Euro 2012 after scoring a hat-trick when coming on as a half-time substitute against Venezuela in February.
His pedigree is not in doubt. But if Soldado leaves perennial Champions League qualifiers Valenica, would Liverpool really be able to tempt the Spaniard to Anfield?
Loic Remy
Capable of playing as a right-sided forward or as a central striker, 25-year-old Loic Remy hit 15 goals in Ligue 1 last season, before following it up with another 10 so far this campaign.
The Marseille striker's form has also made him a regular fixture for the French national team.
While he could be a valuable addition to the squad, Remy is perhaps not the man to carry the burden of being the regular goal scorer at Anfield.
Demba Ba
Oscar Cardozo
A prolific scorer with Lisbon giants Benfica since his move to Portugal five years ago, at 28, Cardozo may feel next season represents his last chance to test himself in one of Europe’s elite leagues.
While not universally loved because of his sometimes languid appearance, the Paraguayan has a lethal left foot and has shown that he can do it at the very highest level in the Champions League this season.
Liverpool were reportedly interested in Cardozo’s services a couple of seasons ago and it might be wise to renew their interest this summer.
Luuk De Jong
The 21-year-old Dutch striker has developed an insatiable eye for goal this season, scoring 20 goals in as many games for FC Twente in the Eiredivisie.
A mobile 6’2” he has the type of build to potentially lead the line at Anfield and possibly form a lethal partnership with Luis Suarez.
The Holland international was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool during the January transfer window and the club could well ignite their interest in the summer.
De Jong’s manager at Twente, Steve McClaren, has recently said he believes the striker is tailor-made for the Premier League. But then the former England boss also said that about Edin Dzeko…
Moussa Dembele
The Fulham forward has been linked in the past week with a summer switch to Anfield after impressing since his move to Craven Cottage in 2010.
Although the Belgium international has often been deployed behind the strikers this season, Dembele has failed to regularly hit the back of the net throughout most of his career.
If the price is right, could the 24-year-old possibly a hard-working squad player to replace Dirk Kuyt?
Olivier Giroud
Currently leading the Ligue 1 scoring charts with 18 goals this season, Olivier Giroud is having a breakout season with Montpellier.
The 25-year-old is a late developer, but, after a goal on his full debut for France against Germany at the end of February, he is hot property both in his homeland and beyond.
His president at Montpellier has slapped and exorbitant €60 million ($78m) price tag on his head, but that should certainly be negotiable should Liverpool be willing to battle with fellow-reported suitors Arsenal for Giroud’s signature.
Ricky van Wolfswinkel
The 23-year-old Dutch front man has struck 13 goals this season to impress in his first campaign in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon.
With just one cap to his name for Holland and still relatively unproven and the top level, if Liverpool were to turn their speculated interest into something more concrete it would represent something of a gamble.
