Los Angeles Lakers Rumors: Carmelo Anthony Is Looking Like A Real Possibility For 2014, Can He Thrive Playing Alongside Kobe Bryant?

Jul 09, 2013 09:39 AM EDT

With Kobe Bryant assuring that he can play another 2-3 years, the Los Angeles Lakers still have time to find a new star to replace Bryant after Dwight Howard bolted for Houston. With so many rumors about who'll be offered in free agency in 2013-14, one name may be the most logical possibility.

Carmelo Anthony.

The Los Angeles Times speculated yesterday that the Lakers could target Anthony if he winds up on the free-agent market. Anthony currently has an opt-out clause on his contract after next season and if the New York Knicks don't step up in 2013-14, it may be so long for the city that never sleeps and welcome to the city of angels.

Antony has longed for the Knicks to team him up with a secondary scorer and was concerned about management's postseason comments that the team would stay as is, and that could play a deciding factor on whether he'll want to stay long term.

The report also cited Bryant's friendship with Anthony, and in 2011 when asked which NBA player he would most like to team up with he said:

"I would actually like to play with Melo," said Bryant, as documented by Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld.com in 2011.  "Championships are won on the inside and I'm always thinking about winning the title.  I would love to play with Melo because I would know that I have an inside presence.  That's really been the biggest strength with our Lakers team."
