Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow (L) shakes hands with New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez after the Patriots defeated the Broncos in their NFL football game in Denver December 18, 2011. Hernandez and Tebow were teammates at the University of Florida."

Aaron Hernandez and Tim Tebow were teammates at the University of Florida and played for the Gators football team long before the star tight end was arrested and charged with murder and now looking back on reports about bible study meetings with coach Urban Meyer, those sessions are now seen in a new context with the murder trial.

Hernandez had some tough things going on in his life before heading to Florida, including the death of his father and as reported in USA Today, when he dealt with some of those tough things, he joined Tebow and the coach at Meyer's home for bible studies. The report says that Hernandez dealt with drug issues and a fight with a bouncer while at school in Florida and he also at one point was investigated in a shooting, but he was able to turn it around to keep himself on the field.

Meyer served as a mentor to him and helped him win the John Mackey Award eventually and as a teammate, Tebow tried to be supportive as well, studying the bible and working on his overall life outlook. Meyer spoke about Hernandez back then, saying that some discipline always helps and that he was getting things on the right track. He slipped in the draft due to the character issues and now that he is in jail, those issues are seen to be as legitimate now and the Patriots look a bit foolish.

Hernandez was arrested and arraigned on Wednesday and charged with murder and at his bail hearing on Thursday more details came out, including that he had a gun the night of the murder. Evidence by the prosecution showed that Hernandez was with Lloyd and spoke with him that night and the motive for the crime is believed to stem from a nightclub incident in which Lloyd spoke to the wrong people.

Tebow signed with the Patriots a few weeks ago and that was looked at as the biggest media deal for the Patriots this summer, but clearly that has changed now with Hernandez. The tight end was expected to be one of the top players for the team this season with Rob Gronkowski hurt and now his NFL career might be over after the team released him. Tebow and Hernandez were teammates once at Florida and won a championship together and while the quarterback hoped to do the same, they remained teammates only for a limited amount of time.
