Vonta Leach Rumors: Miami Dolphins Likely Signing Fullback as New York Giants Up Contract Offer, Veteran Confirms Interest

Fullback Vonta Leach is likely signing with a team by the end of the week and if the Miami Dolphins have it their way, they will be the team to land him. After being released by the Baltimore Ravens, interest has been incredibly high on Leach. While the New York Giants are fighting for his attention, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Dolphins were likely going to be the team to get him.

The two sides have reportedly been working hard on a contract for the three-time Pro Bowler. They are hoping to improve the ground game in order to help quarterback Ryan Tannehill. At 31, Leach is thought to be one of the best fullbacks in the league, garnering praise for his blocking skills. He showed his talents while with the Houston Texans, paving the way for Arian Foster in 2010, a breakout year for the running back. Because of that, Leach earned a three-year deal with the Ravens, making him the highest-paid fullback in the league.

Leach's $4.33 million cap hit in 2013 was the main reason he was released by the Ravens. He was phased out of the offense, making him likely to be the next one out in Baltimore. The Ravens were trying to search for a trade partner to take on Leach, but no one bit, leaving Baltimore with no other option but to release him.

The Dolphins would be a strong fit for Leach. After losing Reggie Bush to free agency, they have a backfield of unproven talent with Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas and Mike Gillislee. Leach would be a strong addition.

The New York Giants still plan on making a run for Leach. The fullback confirmed that he had talked to New York on Monday. The Giants took a hit when fullback Henry Hynoski suffered a knee injury in practice, requiring surgery. The Giants are aware that the Dolphins are trying to sign Leach and plan on upping their contract offer in order to compete. New York has far less salary cap space that the Dolphins so it is unlikely they will be able to beat the offer by the Dolphins.
