New York Giants Rumors: Hakeem Nicks Apologizes to Tom Coughlin for OTAs Absence, Not Committed to Long-Term Contract with Team

After sitting out organized team activities and irritating almost every member of the New York Giants in the process, wide receiver Hakeem Nicks is back at practice for the team's mandatory minicamp. The receiver did not realize his absence would create such a stir within the organization, but is taking a moment to apologize to his head coach for the drama.

Nicks took the time to apologize to Tom Coughlin after the head coach was clearly angry that his wide receiver was missing in action. He had no idea that Nicks was not going to be attending OTAs and felt he should have been there with everyone else. Nicks promised to attend all workouts from here on out.

Nicks told New York media that his absence was not due to any drama surrounding his contract. He sat because of injury concerns. The wide receiver was hampered with knee injuries last season, finishing with just 692 yards. He took the extra time to get healthy.

His contract status is still very much an issue. As the team deals with Victor Cruz, Nicks will be the next in line to demand big money or threaten to walk. In an interview with the New York Post, Nicks remains coy on his long-term plans in New York.

"I really can't speak for my whole career. I enjoy being a Giant right now, I'm going to take care of what I can take care of as long as I'm a Giant, but I do understand the business side of football too," Nicks said.

The young player is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2013 season. He will make $2.7 million in the final year of his contract. A source close to the Giants said Nicks is watching the situation with Cruz closely. Whatever his teammate signs for, Nicks will likely use that as a starting point for his negotiations with the Giants. If he is able to stay healthy and productive, he could command around $11 million.

Nicks is not going to let his contract be a distraction this season. He is not worried about things getting done, citing he has a good relationship with the front office and faith in the organization.
