Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia never have been the best of friends on the PGA Tour and after the two got into it at the Players Championship over a distraction incident and Garcia made a racist comment soon after, the two finally met again at Merion for the 2013 U.S. Open.
According to ESPN.com, Woods and Garcia had a brief exchange with one another on Monday while preparing for the major and they shook hands on the driving range on Merion's West Course. The drama between the two started at the Players Championship when Garcia accused Woods of pulling a club too early and causing the crowd to distract him during their pairing in the second round of the tournament.
During a rain delay Garcia made some remarks about Woods and the incident and said it was his fault and later on Woods responded and said he thought a marshal said he had hit and didn't realize he pulled the club early. Afterwards marshals called Woods a liar, but then another marshal came out and said that he was the one who told Woods about Garcia swinging and that it was his mistake. Woods was ready to put everything behind him, but then at the Euro Tour awards dinner, Garcia made a racist joke.
After being asked about having Woods over for dinner at the Open, he made a remark about "fried chicken" and later apologized. Woods said it was a hurtful remark, but he accepted it and moved on as well. Garcia apologized twice for the comments and he had hoped for a face-to-face apology, which he was able to finally do on Monday and when Woods was asked about the two talking, he told reporters that he wasn't going to comment about it.
Woods has been playing very well this season and despite some struggles at the Memorial last week, he is expected to be the favorite when play starts up on Thursday. He has won four times on Tour this year and although he hasn't won a major in years, many feel that is about to change at Merion.
