The 2013 French Open saw the Women's Singles bracket diminish to just two players as Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams advanced from the semis to the Finals at Roland Garros.
Sharapova didn't breeze by Victoria Azarenka, but she was in command in the two final sets. Sharapova dropped the first set 1-6, but roared back to win the match 6-2, 6-4. With the victory, she advances to the finals where she will defend her French Open title against none other than Williams, who has been the most dominant female tennis player in the sport in the past year.
For Williams the word breezing by the semifinals doesn't capture what took place on Court Philippe Chatrier. Sara Errani was quickly dispatched in two sets as Williams was merciless in her attack winning the semis 6-0, 6-1. It took more time putting this article together than what it took Serena Williams to beat Errani in the first set as Williams won the in 21 minutes. She won 26 of 34 points though committing seven unforced errors to Errani's two. However, Williams' 18 winners put the set away with ease.
With the victory, Williams is in the French Open Finals for the first time since winning it back in 2002, over 10 years ago. It is a great story to tell after Williams was bounced in the first round of last year's Roland Garros. Sharapova's task and focus will be defending her title against Williams, who when healthy, has been almost unbeatable.
Williams possesses the advantage in the head-to-head matchups against Sharapova. The American has won 13 of 15 matches and is 3-0 against Sharapova in clay. Williams last lost to Sharapova in 2004 as Serena has won 12 straight matches against the Russian.
