The Men's Singles semfinals saw its first two participants as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and David Ferrer are fresh off their quarterfinal victories at Roland Garros. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal still have separate dates tomorrow as they have yet played their quarterfinal matchups.
As you might have noticed, Roger Federer hasn't been mentioned in these semifinals talks. That's because the Frenchman Tsonga handled Federer in three straight sets on Tuesday afternoon. The first set was close, but Tsonga didn't allow Federer to get back into the match remaining undefeated in the tournament having won all 15 sets played.
Tsonga is currently trying to become the first French player to win the tournament since Yannick Noah won it 30 years ago in 1983. Federer was his first true test in the tournament as Tsonga was only 3-9 in his career against the Swiss. Tsonga disposed of the great Federer in three straight sets 7-5, 6-3, 6-3.
As for Ferrer, he's trying to ensure the French Open title stays in Spain as a victory in the semis could gain him entrance into the tournament Final. Rafael Nadal might be the No. 3 seed, but he is the favorite having won the tournament seven times in the last eight years. On Tuesday, Ferrer breezed by fellow Spaniard, Tommy Robredo in three straight sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the semis.
Though Ferrer has yet to win a grand slam title, he is making a name for himself tournament after tournament. This will be his third consecutive semifinals appearance in a grand slam tournament and fourth in his last five grand slams.
