French Open 2013: Novak Djokovic In Cruise Control as Nadal is Made to Wait By the Weather Gods; Li Na Crashes Out to Mattek-Sands

Novak Djokovic made sure the weather Gods would not rain on his parade as the world number one pressed the cruise button into overdrive to ease into the third round, while Rafael Nadal will now have to play two matches in two days after seeing his match postponed to Friday.

Rain played havoc on the schedule at Roland Garros on Thursday, which also saw former champion Li Na knocked out by the effervescent and colorful American Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

In a match that was interrupted a few times due to rain, Mattek-Sands held her nerve, winning seven games in a row on her way to a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over the Chinese.

Djokovic was at his imperious best against Guido Pella, thrashing the Argentine 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 in just an hour and 26 minutes.

The Australian Open champion looked barely bothered by the rain delays, hardly putting a step wrong against Pella.

"I was resting mostly, trying to stretch and do some exercises to keep my body warm as much as I could," he said about his routine during the delays.

"Like every human being does, you know, sit, eat, go to toilet, come back, wait for the time to go on the court.

"You're mentally preparing to get on the court. Your intensity is there, and suddenly they call it off.

"You can't affect nature. I'm just glad that I finished the match today (Thursday)."

Djokovic will face the dangerous Grigor Dimitrov next after the Bulgarian coasted to a 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over Lucas Pouille in the second round.

However, frustration was the name of the game for several other players, including Nadal, who did not even make it to the courts with his second round match against Slovakia's Martin Klizan canceled.

Maria Sharapova was cruising 6-4, 4-2 against Eugenie Bouchard before the match had to be called off for the day, but Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka, playing her second match in as many days, booked her place in the third round with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Anika Beck.

"I feel that every year I improve, there is still a lot of room for me to improve but I'm getting really excited by this challenge," Azarenka, who does not favor the red clay, told Reuters.

"You need to really adapt to the surface.

"You don't just have to work on your movement speed wise, you also need to make the small adjustments, the footwork, the little steps.

"Sometimes it's a bit difficult because you need to change your game but I'm really willing to do that."

Sam Stosur set up a clash with Jelena Jankovic in the third round after easing past Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-3, while the impressive Sloane Stephens thrashed her fellow American Vania King 6-1, 6-3.
