Newcastle vs Arsenal: Predictions, Preview, Team News, Injuries and Expected Lineups of Final English Premier League Game of the Season

May 18, 2013 03:39 AM EDT

After what has arguably been one of Arsene Wenger's worst ever seasons as Arsenal manager, everything comes down to this - the final day of the English Premier League season, the game against Newcastle at St James' Park, and three points which will ensure Arsenal's qualification to the Champions League for a 16th straight season.

Arsenal currently lie in fourth, one point clear of fifth-placed Tottenham, who host Sunderland in their Premier League game at White Hart Lane Sunday.

If the Gunners win, there is nothing that Tottenham can do to make the top-four. If Arsenal lose or even draw, however, Spurs can sneak in with a victory of their own.

Arsenal can even climb above Chelsea to third place, with just two points separating the two sides; there is also a possibility of the two clubs having to play a play-off if Chelsea draw 0-0 and Arsenal win 2-1 at Newcastle, which would mean the two clubs are level on points and on goal difference.

That match has been slated to be held at Villa Park Sunday week, if necessary.

Wenger will not be contemplating those situations. His concentration will be on one thing - win at Newcastle.

Arsenal looked nervous at times in the must-win game against Wigan Tuesday, their last game of the season at the Emirates. However, they did eventually come away with a 4-1 win, thanks to a three-goal blitz in the second half.

Newcastle have nothing to play for, having already secured their place in the Premier League for next season, following last weekend's 2-1 win over already-relegated Queens Park Rangers.

However, having suffered heavy defeats in their last two home games to Liverpool and Sunderland, Alan Pardew and co. will be desperate to finish the season on a high in front of their own fans.

Arsenal look like they will have to do without influential midfielder Mikel Arteta for the game after the vice-captain picked up a calf injury against Wigan.

If Arteta is ruled out, Wenger will most probably take a risk playing Jack Wilshere from the start, despite the midfielder struggling with an ankle problem.

Francis Coquelin could also be given an opportunity, which would free up Aaron Ramsey, one of Arsenal's most impressive players over their nine-match unbeaten run, to go forward more often, which would not be the case if Wilshere were to play.

Thomas Vermaelen is another option, but Wenger is unlikely to take a chance on the Arsenal skipper, who hasn't really played in that position for extended periods.

There is some good news, though, with Olivier Giroud set to be available after serving his three-match suspension. Wenger will have to decide on whether to use the Frenchman from the start or stick with Lukas Podolski up front, after the German international scored two goals against Wigan.

Steven Taylor is expected to return for Newcastle, after the defender missed the last game due to illness, along with Sylvain Marveaux. Goalkeeper Rob Elliot is suspended, with Steve Harper set to play his final game for the Magpies.

It really is quite simple for Arsenal, win and play in the Champions League next season. Lose and Wenger and co. could face the scary scenario of having to play in the Europa League.

Expected lineups: Newcastle: Harper; Debuchy, Taylor, Coloccini, Yanga-Mbiwa; Tiote, Cabaye; Ben Arfa, Gouffran, Guttierez; Cisse.

Arsenal: Szczesny; Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs; Ramsey, Wilshere; Walcott, Rosicky, Cazorla; Podolski.

Prediction: 4-1 to Arsenal
