In Dwight Freeney's 11-year career, he has played for exactly one team. Now that his time with the Indianapolis Colts has come to an end, he is forced to find somewhere else to finish out his career. The job search has been tough as the market is proving relatively weak for veteran players. Freeney has had interest from numerous teams but has yet to be offered a contract of any kind. As another visit ends without a deal in place, Freeney is letting one team know that he is still highly interested, even if the feeling is not mutual.
Back in February, Freeney expressed his love for the New York Giants, saying it would be a dream to play for the team. Three months later and the veteran still feels the same way, even if the Giants are not returning the favor. Freeney's father recently went on Sirius radio to say the reason the Giants do not want him is because they are broke.
"His heart is with...talking to him, he would love to be with the Giants. But the Giants unfortunately...doesn't have the money for it. They're broke," Hugh Freeney said.
Freeney's dad could be saying this in light of his son being forced to lower his salary demands after a lack of interest. Once demanding upwards of $8 million, he now has agreed to cut that in half in order to increase team's interests.
Freeney was born in Hartford, Conn. and idolized the Giants when he was younger. If the Giants are not broke, Freeney would be a good fit. The three-time First-Team All Pro was a former Defensive Player of the Year and led the Colts in sacks almost every year of his career. Last season, he recorded 12 tackles and five sacks in 14 games.
Freeney's latest attempt at a team came with the San Diego Chargers. The veteran visited the team after Melvin Ingram tore his ACL and will miss the entire season. Freeney hoped a flight almost immediately after the injury to the second-year starter was announced. His visit included a physical with the team and extended an extra day. However, he left California as a free agent after no deal was done.
The hold up in contract talks could be because Freeney is still looking to get a bigger contract. The Chargers must upgrade their pass rush with Ingram gone and Freeney looked like the ideal fit. They could have signed him for a one-year deal and then taken things from there. Instead, the job hunt continues.
