Jose Reyes injured himself at second base while stealing a base against the Kansas City Royals in the top of the sixth. Check out the footage of the awkward slide at second base as Reyes seemed distracted.
With Melky Cabrera at bat, and the Blue Jays leading 8-4, Reyes ran to second, fell right on top of the bag and then began twisting and turning on the ground. Everything seemed alright. Except Reyes began to grimace. The second base umpire immediately noticed something was wrong, so from calling the play safe, he called time and looked into the Blue Jays dugout as their star player sat on the ground holding his ankle.
Seconds passed by and Reyes attempted to walk on his ankle before laying down and covering his face with his jersey. It became obvious it was more than a simple ankle sprain and Reyes laid straight down on the ground as the trainers took a look at his left ankle.
On the replay, give steps before getting to second, Reyes is looking at Cabrera at the plate. He then sits on his left ankle and it twists underneath his buttocks. Painful! Royals catcher, Salvador Perez walked to second base to check on Reyes before he was carted off the field.
It's almost a reoccurring thing with Reyes, who has been injury prone since his early days with the New York Mets and because he's a base stealer, it's always something concerning his legs, which immediately takes away a lot of his value. He only played 36 games in 2009. What makes this injury even worse is the Blue Jays were leading this game comfortably and stealing second base was almost pointless.
If there is any good news, the Blue Jays have plenty of speedy guys they can place at the top of the lineup. Maicer Izturis and Emilio Bonifacio can also play up the middle. Not to mention the Blue Jays also have utility man Mark DeRosa who can play anywhere in the infield.
News on how long he will be out has yet to be released. What's sad is that Reyes could have had the potential to have an MVP caliber season.
