The Masters are one of the most anticipated and prestigious sporting events in America and the price for tickets on the resale market shows exactly why, as the badges for the tournament are going for a record amount of money as the four day event approaches.
According to ESPN.com, Darren Rovell reports that tickets for the tournament at Augusta National are at the highest in 16 years and that some people looking for badges for the four-day event on the resale market may pay up to $7,000 if they want to watch Tiger Woods go for a green jacket. The tournament day badges are going for the highest amount, but the report also says that practice round tickets for Tuesday are in the $1,000 price range despite being started at $50 per ticket.
The Masters has a different way of doing tickets than other tournaments, as they are distributed to people and are not sold to the general public and the tournament has four day badges for people for just $250 that are in the area. In 1997 tickets also sky rocketed in price and one reason this year may be due to how well Tiger Woods is playing, as he has won three tournaments ahead of the Masters for the first time in years.
Woods is also back in the number one ranking after winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational, taking it away from young star Rory McIlroy, who has looked much better since starting off the season in awful fashion.
"I have never seen anything like this," said Patrick McGee, whose sports and entertainment marketing firm has taken care of corporate clients in Augusta for the last decade. "It's the combination of the Final Four being in Atlanta, Tiger as well as a more stringent effort by Augusta National to make it tougher to scalp tickets."
Tickets on Stub Hub were going for over $10,000 and many corporate packages are being sold for the tournament and there is a higher demand after the NCAA Final Four was also held in the Atlanta area. Woods and Phil Mickelson have been working on their games ahead of the tournament and the two stars look like favorite for the Masters as it gets started on Thursday.
