The nephew of New York Giants owner John Mara was arrested in Connecticut after allegedly smashing someone in the head with a bottle at a New Year's Eve party.

According to the Associated Press, the 22-year-old was charged with felony assault for hitting someone in the head with a bottle at a party near his school Fairfield University. The report says that Mara was arrested by area police on Friday and posted $150,000 bail after being charged with felony assault.

The incident occurred on Fairfield Beach Road, which is a neighborhood area near the Long Island Sound where many Fairfield University students live, police said. According to the AP, Mara is a sociology and anthropology major and the neighborhood where the fight occurred was three miles from campus.

The report says that Mara, who is a resident of Mount Kisco, will be arraigned in Bridgeport Super Court on March 8.

Police said that the victim suffered life-threatening injuries after they were struck and that security was immediately required. The victim was not yet identified. According to Mara's lawyer, William Dow, he will plead not guilty.

Martha Milcarek, a spokeswoman from the school, confirmed that Mara is a senior at Fairfield University, which is a Jesuit school.

"We're confident a jury will find him not guilty," Dow told The Associated Press.

The arrest came after a two-month investigation by police and Mara eventually turned himself in after he found out an arrest warrant was issued for him. The charge carries up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

There is also a chance Mara could face further punishment from the school.

"In a situation like this, not only is a student subject to any civil action but there would be an investigation from the standpoint of the school and, pending the outcome, the student would be subject to the disciplinary code of the university," Milcarek said.

On Monday, a spokesman for the Giants said the team and John Mara, who is president and chief executive officer, had no comment on the incident.
