South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius is facing premeditated murder charges for the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and the prosecution may have received another solid piece of evidence, as a bloodied cricket bat has been found at the scene of the crime, according to Yahoo.com.

Pistorius was charged on Friday with the murder of Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model also from South Africa. She was shot dead with four bullet wounds at the home and after reports came out that the Olympian mistook her as a burglar, the police quickly said that was not the case.

The family of Pistorius said that the Olympian did not intentionally kill the model, with his father saying to a newspaper that he had "zero doubt" his son had mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder. The family released a statement saying that he is "numb with shock as well as grief" over Steenkamp's death.

The police have said that there were previous incidents at the hom regarding domestic issues and that security was at the location earlier in the night after neighbors reported an argument between Pistorius and Steenkamp. Reports say that the woman was wearing a negligee at the time of her death and that the bed was rumpled.

The South Africa's independent City Press newspaper spoke with police sources and said that the woman's head was "crushed". Sources said the case against Pistorius is "rock solid".

"There was lots of blood on the bat," one source said.

The police are investigating the use of the bat and weather it played a part in Steenkamp's death. There is a chance she could have used it to defend herself, but it was reported that she was shot through the bathroom door of the home. There are other theories, including that he used the bat to break down the door she was hiding behind or that he used it to beat her.

"The suspicion is that the first shot, in the bedroom, hit her in the hip. She then ran and hid herself in the toilet... He fired three more shots," a police source told City Press.

The reports about Pistorius mistaking his girlfriend for an intruder have continued to be shot down by police.

"I dont know where they got it from, but they didn't get it from any official source in the police," Malila told AFP. "We want to give the investigators an opportunity to investigate and we will make an official statement after the bail application."

More reports have come about the night of the murder, with The British Sunday People reporting that a crying Pistorius made a phone call to friend at around 4:00 am saying: "My baba, I've killed my baba (baby in Afrikaans). God take me away."

Pistorius appeared shaken and emotional in court and according to Yahoo, the runner has built a strong team of lawyers and other experts to help with his defense.

Pistorius's mother defended the runner to the press.

"I know it was a mistake anybody can make" Gertie Pistorius told AFP. "I have got my trust in my (grandson) and I have got my trust in the case, and I am sure things will go the right way" she said in a telephone interview from a retirement home in Pretoria.
