Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's chase for Victor Wanyama might just be coming to an end with the Kenyan FA suggesting the Celtic midfielder was close to sealing a move to one of the "big two clubs in the world."
Wanyama has been of much interest to Ferguson over the past season or so, with the Scot even going out himself to have a look at the defensive midfielder in action for Celtic, in their 4-0 win over Dundee United a week ago.
The 21-year-old has been the subject of interest from several leading clubs including Arsenal. Arsene Wenger is in dire need of a solid defensive midfielder, and although the Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for West Ham's Mohamed Diame, Wanyama is also being looked at as an option.
Arsenal reportedly had a bid turned down in the summer, and Manchester United could be ready to take advantage.
Speaking at a function in Nairobi, Kenyan FA president Sam Nyamweya said a big move was imminent for the country's biggest player.
"Wanyama will soon be joining one of the big two clubs in the world," he said. "It is an exciting moment for us, which means that Kenya is a powerhouse in football."
Ferguson has been looking far and wide for a midfielder that can run the game in the central of the park, and while Michael Carrick has been especially impressive in a holding role this year, the Englishman can contribute more if he had a more defensive midfield partner playing alongside him.
Meanwhile, Manchester United legend Denis Law has backed Wayne Rooney to break all of United's goalscoring records.
"When you see some players in and around the penalty box, you don't think they'll score," Law told Inside United. "But, with Rooney, you never think that.
"We always dreaded playing against Jimmy Greaves when he was at Spurs because you knew that if he was in and around the area there was a fair chance he'd score a goal. And Rooney is in that category.
"Along the way, I obviously beat someone else's total (to get to 237) so it's something that is always going to happen in football. I was happy to beat someone else and it's inevitable that Rooney will beat mine.
"I said when he first joined the club that if he can steer clear of serious injuries, he'll be the record goalscorer for Manchester United, there's no doubt about that."
