Manchester United Transfer Rumours: Robert Lewandowski on the Verge of Joining United

Dec 27, 2012 04:37 AM EST

Manchester United have agreed a lucrative deal with Robert Lewandowski, with the Borussia Dortmund striker set to leave Germany for Old Trafford in the summer.

Lewandowski has stalled on signing a new contract with Dortmund, and with his current deal set to end in 2014, it is widely believed that the German champions will sell their striker if an acceptable bid were received.

United, who have been long-term admirers of the 24-year-old, with Sir Alex Ferguson even personally going to watch him a couple of times, have reportedly offered Lewandowski a salary worth around €5 million a year (£4.1 million, $6.6 million), which is double his current wages at Dortmund, according to respected German newspaper Bild.

The German club are ready to accept a fee of around €22 million (£18 million, $29 million), with United willing to pay the fee to sign one of Europe's most in-demand strikers.

The only problem with the deal will be the fact that United are already flush with strikers, with Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck already in their ranks, not to mention Federico Macheda and Angelo Henriquez.

While Van Persie and Rooney are first choice for Ferguson, the arrival of Lewandowski will further limit Welbeck's and Hernandez's chances of making their mark in the starting lineup.

If indeed the Lewandowski deal were to come to fruition at the end of the season, either Welbeck or Hernandez are likely to leave, with the Mexican striker particularly likely to be unhappy with his chance being further diminished.

There is no doubt that Lewandowski will add more bite to United's attack, which is already the best in the English Premier League, and with the Polish striker familiar with Shinji Kagawa, who made his move to United from Dortmund at the start of the season, he should have little problems settling into life at Old Trafford.

The only question will be: What then of Hernandez, who scored a brilliant winner to give United a dramatic 4-3 win against Newcastle on Boxing Day?
