Chelsea Transfer News: Fernando Torres Not Guaranteed a Starting Place, Says Di Matteo

Fernando Torres is buzzing after winning the European Championship with Spain, even scoring a goal in his country's 4-0 win over Italy in the final.

However, when he comes back to his club at Stamford Bridge, coach Roberto Di Matteo does not expect to make him the automatic No 1 choice.

The £50 million ($77.5 million) striker has failed to make a mark at Chelsea ever since making his high-profile move from Liverpool in January 2011.

The 28-year-old was behind Didier Drogba in the striking ladder, and after missing out on a Champions League starting berth in his club's penalty shootout win over Bayern Munich, Torres expressed deep concerns on his current situation at the club.

However, Drogba's departure is expected to make Torres the main man at Chelsea.

The Blues have gone along this summer trying to find the perfect pieces for Torres, signing ball-playing playmakers in the mould of Eden Hazard and Marko Marin as Roman Abramovich tries to get the best out of the striker he spent so much money on.

Di Matteo, however, insisted Torres would not be guaranteed a starting berth.

"We have three strikers at the moment in the squad and they will all have to fight and there is competition which is very healthy," Di Matteo told the club's official website.

"They will have to fight for their position and whoever is in the best form and is best for the team will play.

Torres has a three-week break from the end of his involvement with Spain before he joins Chelsea's pre-season preparations and Di Matteo expects him to come all-guns blazing.

"I did speak to Torres after the final, I had a chat with him the morning after and we have been in touch since as well," Di Matteo said.

"It was a feeling he had at the time. There are no concerns about Fernando at all and I am expecting him here in a good mood, buzzing and to be very good next season.

"I was very happy with Fernando (last season).

"I said this many times and winning the Euro 2012 Golden Boot, being European champion and the trophies he won with us should give him a lot of confidence -- but I was always very happy with him and I expect him next season to be a fantastic player for us."
