The New York Mets have been stuck in a terrible cycle for years and as they try to turn things around, spending money on players could be one way to do things for 2014, which is why the team is looking at Bronson Arroyo and some other free agents as possible targets this winter.
Arroyo has been one of the most durable pitchers in baseball over the past few years and that is one reason why he is getting interest from the Mets, as they could use an innings eater like him. According to ESPN.com, the Mets and general manager Sandy Alderson plans on meeting with Arroyo this offseason and that could mean a deal eventually. The report says that the team met with Jhonny Peralta and outfielder Chris Young this offseason and now Arroyo could be next in line and the team also has met with Robinson Cano, although that deal is very unlikely.
There were reports that the Mets asked about Ryan Braun from the Brewers, but that ended up just being talk and wasn't anything real on either side. Arroyo has been solid over the past few years, going at least 199 innings since back in 2005 and he has had a decent ERA over that time as well and while he is 37-years-old next season, that doesn't mean a team won't sign him and reports from SB nation says he has been gett5ing interest from multiple teams, although no one has made a contract offer yet.
The Mets may have some money to spend and with their rotation shaping up to be Jonathon Niese, Zack Wheeler and Dillon Gee without Matt Harvey, they need someone in there who can eat innings and handle a heavy workload and Arroyo could be that guy. The report from ESPN.com says that Arroyo wants a three year deal and that the Mets likely will try for a two year deal and the addition of some type of pitcher is necessary after the team lost Harvey for the season to surgery.
The Mets already signed Young this offseason and now they are looking at Arroyo, who won 14 games last season with the Reds with a sub-4.00 ERA and 202 innings and those are numbers that the Mets could be very satisfied with. The Braun deal isn't happening and while the team has a log way to go, adding Arroyo could be a nice start.
