Matt Harvey Video: New York Mets Pitcher Starting All-Star Game Appears On Late Night with Jimmy Fallon To Ask Fans What They Truly Think Of Matt Harvey

Jul 16, 2013 05:20 PM EDT

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey is the starter for the National League in Tuesday's All-Star game at his home stadium of Citi Field and prior to the big game, the sensation for the Mets took to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for a funny video involving local fans.

Harvey appeared in a segment for the show that sent him to interview local fans about, guess who, Matt Harvey. The pitcher went around and spoke to a number of fans and asked them about the stud pitcher for the Mets and many said they were big fans of his and the league, while having no idea that they were talking to the man himself. Many of the fans showed some embarrassment after he revealed that it was himself asking the questions, but for the most part everyone was a good sport about it.

Harvey is in his first full season in the major leagues and he has been dominating hitters all year, leading the NL in strikeouts while being third in ERA. Many felt that Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw would start the game, but Giants manager Bruce Bochy pegged him as the starter in his home stadium, which hasn't happened since Roger Clemens did it back in 2004. Harvey has flirted with no-hitters this season and he has given Mets fans hope while putting up a 2.35 ERA with a 7-2 record as well as a 0.92 WHIP. Harvey won his last start and now he is primed to take the mound at Citi Field for the All-Star game.

Harvey's appearance will mark the fourth time that a Mets pitcher has started the game joining Dwight Gooden, who did it twice, as well as Tom Seaver, who did it in the legendary 1970 game. Harvey has been one of the best young pitchers in baseball and manager Terry Collins said that the rest of this season he will be on an innings limit of about 220. He currently is at 130 and the Mets are also planning to skip some extra time between starts to keep him fresh all season.

Max Scherzer is starting for the AL after leading the majors with 13 wins and he now is putting together the best season in his young career. Scherzer is 13-1 with a 3.19 ERA and 152 strikeouts and he is leading the league in wins over big names like Felix Hernandez and Bartolo Colon. Hernandez was likely next in line, as he has 10 wins before the All-Star break and is leading the AL in ERA with a 2.53 clip to go along with 140 strikeouts, good for third in the league.
