Jason Collins made a huge announcement on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week, as he became the first active openly gay player in all of the four major sports and the free agent made the news on Monday as SI.com released the story and behind the scenes information."

Washington Wizards center Jason Collins made a breakthrough in the debate about homosexuality in sports Monday when he became the first athlete in major American sports to come out as an openly gay athlete.

The news brought an abundance amount of mixed reactions varying from fans, celebrities and athletes from all walks of sports, including reactions from TNT's "Inside the NBA" crew.

Former NBA power forward Charles Barkley expressed his utmost support of Collins for decision to free himself of his secret. Even though Barkley doesn't agree that it's anyone's business what sexual orientation a person chooses to live, he said he is happy for Collins.

Barkley also said he's a firm believer that Collins is not the first gay athlete, stating that he believes that gay players in the NBA have existed for years, but Collins is just the first to make it known.

"I've said this many times, we've all played with gay players," said Sir Charles.

However, through all his unwavering support, Barkley also admitted that there are people in the country who may not agree with Collins' lifestyle choice. Though he doesn't agree with those people, he doesn't feel that their opinions should be dismissed neither.

"People should be able to disagree if they don't like it and not get crucified," he said.

In his interview with Sports Illustrated, Collins specifically mentioned Shaquille O'Neal, speaking on how despite his sexuality, he's much enjoyed going head-to-head with O'Neal on many occasions as a competitor. Shaq recalled his times where he competed with Collins and admitted he has nothing but the highest level of respect for Collins and his lifestyle.

"I've always liked his character," Shaq said. "Character is found in those who lead. I commend you, Jason, for coming out and showing us what leadership looks like."
