The New York Jets finally decided to end the Tim Tebow experiment that cost them $4.1 million dollars and a number of embarrassing headlines, giving way to the Geno Smith era soon after he was taken with the teams second round draft pick on Friday night in Radio City.
According to ESPN.com, Tebow was released on Monday and he now can sign with another NFL team after the Jets basically sabotaged his season by barely using him. The team did Tebow no favors either, as they tried to trade him for so long that now many teams already brought in undrafted players, leaving the quarterback with few options. Some fits that could work around the NFL include the San Diego Chargers, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots, but it's unclear if any will sign him.
The Jets said all the right things about Tebow after he was released, but their actions said otherwise, as they basically did nothing with him all year and never gave him a chance, or a chance to succeed. When it comes to quarterbacks, while Mark Sanchez led his team to two AFC championship games, who was the last of the two to win a division or a playoff game while being a starter? That would be Tebow with the Broncos. Tebow now has to find another place to play and that very well could be in the CFL or somewhere else around the professional ranks.
He was told Monday by Jets brass while already in his workouts clothes that he was released and he left soon after he found out. Reports initially had Sanchez being the one released with the team keeping Tebow, but now that appears likely not happen with Sanchez as well. The Jets will have to pay him no matter what they do, so they might just keep him on the roster and hope they can trade him (sounds familiar?).
Now Tebow will have to figure out his options, but since he has been such a hard worker and has faith in himself, he likely will find somewhere else he can contribute, possibly in the AFC East again. A good option could be the Chargers, as they need a solid backup for Philip Rivers and with Manti Te'o in camp, how bad could the media be for coach Mike McCoy?
