Kansas City Chiefs Draft Preview: Player Rumors, Full Round Picks, Team Needs, Trade Predictions As NFL Draft Starts April 25

The Kansas City Chiefs have the number one overall pick in the draft after being the worst team in the NFL last season, but based on what they have done this offseason they likely will not be in that space again, as they traded for Alex Smith and have a number of picks heading into the draft next week.

The team went just 2-14 last season and they now have eight picks in the draft after making the trade for Smith that forced them to give up their second round pick from this year, which would have been the number 34 pick overall. Smith is a big upgrade from Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn last season and now the team likely will not select a quarterback, which is what many felt they would do before the trade was made, especially with names like Ryan Nassib, Geno Smith and Matt Barkley on the board.

The biggest team needs to the Chiefs now are at offensive line, cornerback and linebacker, three positions that should offer a good selection of players in the draft. The team signed free agents Sean Smith and Dunta Robinson at corner, but after losing Brandon Carr last season in free agency they may want some depth. The team also has to figure out what to do with unhappy franchised left tackle Branden Albert, who they may trade to the Dolphins to get back a second round pick.

There were some thoughts that the Chiefs could trade out of the number one spot, but chances are they will stay since their next pick after the first one is at number 63 in the third round as of now. The team has one first round pick, two third round picks, one four, one five, two six round picks and one seventh selection. The team is likely to select Luke Joeckel or Eric Fisher number one, as they are the two top linemen in the draft.

Cornerback could be another option, as Alabama, corner Dee Milliner will be available and linebacker could be another options as well with the top pick, as names like Dion Jordan and Jarvis Jones are considered top 10 talents. Most mock drafts have Joeckel as the pick with fisher and Smith behind, while Sharrif Floyd and Milliner are wild cards in the decision.

Some past first round picks for the Chiefs include successful picks like Eric Berry, Branden Albert and Dwayne Bowe, while some misses include Jonathan Baldwin, Tyson Jackson and Glenn Dorsey, while Larry Johnson and Derrick Johnson were mostly successful.

Prediction: Chiefs stand pat and select the safe pick in Luke Joeckel.
