The Philadelphia Eagles have undergone a huge overhaul under new head coach Chip Kelly and star defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins was one of those changes, as he was released last week after spending two seasons with the team.
According to ESPN.com, Jenkins already has a number of suitors as a free agent, as he has met with the New York Giants and he is also planning to meet with the Seattle Seahawks or San Francisco 49ers. Insider Adam Schefter reported the news about Jenkins and said that he will meet with the Seahawks on Monday and the 49ers on Tuesday.
Jenkins was cut by the Eagles last week after signing a five-year, $25 million contract two years ago after starring with the Green Bay Packers. Jenkins has started every game over the past two seasons with the Eagles and had four sacks last season. Jenkins was part of the self-proclaimed "dream team" by quarterback Vince Young, but the team missed the playoffs over the past two years by going 8-8 in 2011 and 4-12 last season.
Jenkins worked with the Eagles to restructure his contract before last season to stay with the team, but the new management decided to part ways with the defensive tackle after this season. He has recorded 9.5 sacks over two seasons with the Eagles and he played seven years for the Packers, amassing nearly 40 sacks in 125 career games.
Jenkins has already met with the New York Giants, who released Chris Canty earlier this offseason. Jenkins would be a natural replacement for Canty, who was one of the stalwarts on the Giants defense while winning the Super Bowl after the 2011 season.
The Giants have a deep roster at defensive tackle with Linval Joseph, Shaun Rogers, Marvin Austin and Markus Kuhn, but could use another veteran in the lineup like Jenkins.
The defensive tackle has also had interest in returning to his former team after leaving two years ago as a free agent. Jenkins could help the Packers on defense, as they allowed a high amount of yards in 2012. The 32-year-old was very productive in Green Bay and could have a resurgence with his former team, who are coming off of a loss in the playoffs to the 49ers.
